The names of the two short not-stories are:
*Hope* and *One Wish*

Hope inspired by Paul Fleischman, not O. Henry as I had previously 'said'. I don't know what I was thinking, but I clearly wasn't. >.<
And One Wish inspired by Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar.
